Hiking in the Black Mountains and Toe River Valley near Burnsville, North Carolina is a very rewarding experience. The area has a wide variety of terrain to explore ranging from lush river valleys to majestic mountain ridges.  At  6,684 foot elevation, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. 

High Peaks Leads Scenic Mountains-to-Sea Trail Hike Feb 2

Take a mid-winter outdoor adventure with the NC High Peaks Trail Association when the club tackles a scenic section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail on Saturday, Feb. 2. The hike will begin at Buck Creek Gap and proceed two miles northbound to Castle Rock, then return to Buck Creek Gap.

High Peaks Seeks Input From Youth and Families

The NC High Peaks Trail Association invites all youth and families to go on-line and fill out a survey that the club will use to broaden its programs and appeal to that demographic. Participants will be automatically entered into a drawing, with a lucky winner to be awarded free High Peaks merchandise.

High Peaks Announces Black Mountains Hiking Challenge

Hikers looking for adventure and gorgeous views are invited to test their endurance and earn a cool patch by completing the Black Mountains Hiking Challenge, a rigorous set of 23 hikes that includes all the official trails in the highest mountain range in the Eastern United States.


Due to the expected Winter Storm, these two hikes have now been cancelled.

High Peaks Birders will lead a Birding Stroll at the Mountain Heritage High School on Saturday November 17th beginning at 8am.  Please bring your binoculars, and dress for the weather, we will bird rain or shine only cancelling if morning travel conditions are dangerous. 

We will bird along the 1.5 mile Cougar Walking Trail.  Meet us in the upper parking lot, to the right of the guard house, near the disk golf trailhead.
